(2) He had a son named Saul, an impressive young man without equal among the Israelites-a head taller than any of the others. From his shoulders upward he was taller than any of the people.ġSa 9:1-2 There was a Benjamite, a man of standing, whose name was Kish son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah of Benjamin. There was not a more handsome person than he among the children of Israel. And he had a choice and handsome son whose name was Saul. There was a man of Benjamin whose name was Kish the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of power. A king would tax the people, and yet still the people of Israel wanted a king to be like the other nations. Their children, workers for the fields, people for war, cooks, their land and vineyards. Samuel warned the nation that if they chose a king he would demand many things from them. He wanted them to live by faith trusting in God to lead them, not to look to a man. God’s plan was for His people to be separate from other nations, not like them. Samuel was unhappy but God told him, it is not you they have rejected, but me. They wanted to be like all other nations with a man that would lead them as king. “Make us a king to judge us like all the nations”, was their cry. Samuel’s sons did not walk in the way of their father. The nation came to Samuel when he was old, concerned that he would die. And the Lord said to Samuel, "Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations." But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to judge us." So Samuel prayed to the Lord. Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah, and said to him, "Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. With this in mind we need to first start with some background information as to the state of the people of God at that time.Īfter Joshua died God gave the nation of Israel judges to rule them, followed by Eli and his wicked sons, then finally Samuel the prophet. We begin this study into the life of David, who was called from the sheepfolds to be crowned king of Israel. Then the LORD said, "Rise and anoint him he is the one." (13) So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came upon David in power. He was ruddy, with a fine appearance and handsome features. But Samuel said, "The LORD has not chosen this one either." (9) Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, "Nor has the LORD chosen this one." (10) Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, "The LORD has not chosen these." (11) So he asked Jesse, "Are these all the sons you have?" "There is still the youngest," Jesse answered, "but he is tending the sheep." Samuel said, "Send for him we will not sit down until he arrives." (12) So he sent and had him brought in. ![]() ![]() Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." (8) Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. ![]() (6) When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, "Surely the LORD's anointed stands here before the LORD." (7) But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. Consecrate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me." Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. They asked, "Do you come in peace?" (5) Samuel replied, "Yes, in peace I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. ![]() When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town trembled when they met him. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate." (4) Samuel did what the LORD said. I have chosen one of his sons to be king." (2) But Samuel said, "How can I go? Saul will hear about it and kill me." The LORD said, "Take a heifer with you and say, 'I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.' (3) Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. 1Sa 16:1-13 The LORD said to Samuel, "How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. ![]()
